The Department of Education (DepEd) City Schools Division of Marawi—now officially part of the Ministry of Basic, Higher and Technical Education (MBHTE) under the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM)—was established on July 1, 1956.

Key Historical Context

The creation of the school division was a direct result of Marawi’s transition from a municipality to a city.

  • Legal Basis: On June 16, 1956, Republic Act No. 1552 was approved, which converted the Municipality of Dansalan into the City of Marawi.
  • Administrative Shift: Shortly after the city charter was enacted, the Division of Marawi City was formally organized as an independent unit from the Division of Lanao del Sur on July 1, 1956.
  • Modern Era: Following the ratification of the Bangsamoro Organic Law, the division transitioned from the national DepEd structure to the BARMM’s regional education ministry (MBHTE).
